Preparing for the Family Trek to Everest Base Camp

Family Trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC) is fun, packed with excitement but very demanding in terms of preparation. EBC, which stands at 5,364 m (17,598 ft), is approachable but quite difficult particularly for families with members of varying age groups.

This is the way to get ready for such a magnificent trip and ensure that it is as safe and pleasant as possible.

Physical Preparation

Proper physical preparation for the Everest Base Camp trek is required before starting this trek. The terrains are rugged, steep, and irregular with trekkers having to walk about, 6 to 8 hours on average for several days.

9

Families intending to involve in such activity should start the physical training at least 2-3 months prior to the trip, putting emphasis on raising their stamina, endurance and production of muscles in the legs.

Lack of adequate physical fitness is also a huge drawback as most family members can get exhausted within a short time and are likely to get injuries or even experience excessive fatigue which will lower the enjoyment level.

Mental Preparation

Along with physical preparedness, mental preparation also plays a vital role in completing the Family Trek to Everest Base Camp. As mentioned earlier, this journey will be physically challenging but to tackle those challenges, you and your family must be mentally ready to overcome it.

Landmarks such as steep terrains along the trail to Tengboche and Dughla Hills, and glacial moraine alongside the Khumbu Glacier will test your physical limits.

But it all stands out on how you and your family handle these set of hurdles. Tiredness can be minimized by mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing or imagery techniques may alleviate both physical and emotional stress during the trek for adults and children alike.

First Aid and Safety Measures

Your family’s safety is the main priority while going on this trek. So it is advised to carry a sufficient first-aid kit during the trek as there might be very limited medical facilities.

The kit should have the elements such as antiseptics, gauzes, aspirin, etc., as well as any medication that one’s family may need.

Also, Everest Base Camp Trek is associated with other dangers, for instance, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), so it is also important to pack some AMS medication and learn how altitude effects the body. We advise you take the oxygen supplements, especially if you are traveling with your children, to remain safe.

In the meantime, basic safety instructions will be provided to all family members especially children so that all of them will be ready and alert during the excursion.

How to avoid altitude sickness during Family Trek to Everest Base Camp?

Going on a Family Trek to Everest Base Camp is a rewarding journey, but most people who have not trekked at high altitudes are prone to AMS.

Speaking of the risks of altitude sickness, they happen when the elevation is above 2500m in general, but more specifically – in the areas of Namche Bazaar at 3440m, Tengboche at 3867m, Dingboche at 4410m, Lobuche at 4930m which are among the most visited sites in the region.

The steeper terrains of Gorak Shep (5,164m) and Everest base camp (5,364m) poses higher risks to the trekkers because of the thin oxygen level. This way families can be able to identify the risk zones and therefore make better decisions throughout the whole trek.

It will be necessary to use good time and ascend gradually to avoid sickness known as acute mountain sickness. High altitude climbers are advised to ascend up to 300 to 500 meters only a day after the Namche Bazaar point.

All the trekking itineraries incorporate days for acclimatization in Namche and Dingboche which serve to make the body adjust to a lower altitude.

In these days, families can go for small treks to the neighboring places like Everest view hotel near Namche to make their bodies adapt to the high altitude environments.

The best form of prevention for the two especially to both adults and children is taking the trek slowly, giving allowance to the body to adapt.

Another preventive measures is hydration: being dehydrated one increases their risk of getting altitude sickness. Trekkers should take approximately 3-4 liters of water per day and should refrain from taking alcohol and other products containing caffeine since they dry the body.

Some trekkers also take prophylactic medications like acetazolamide (Diamox) but again anybody intending to take any medication should seek advice from a health care practitioner preferably a pediatrician if children are involved.

The symptoms in our body should be heeded; in case if anyone of them has headache, dizziness or shortness of breath it is advisable to pull back.

If one feels worse with symptoms of altitude sickness, he should descend to the lower altitude as soon as possible and consult a doctor.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance becomes an integral aspect while determining the itinerary of a Family Trek to Everest Base Camp. Trekking at high altitudes, especially within such isolated regions as that of Everest, makes one risk prone.

Events such as accidents and illness, altitude sickness, and weather conditions among others, may threaten the journey.

Travel Insurance is aimed at alleviating such instances of worry by covering medical costs and other associated costs what with the high altitude mountains of the Himalayas, trip interruptions, risks of lost baggage, and in most cases, search and rescue along the expedition.

This is in addition to covering the costs related to medical emergencies since excessive travel insurance costs are useful in case the insured person travels for a non-recreational purpose.

The insurance also assists in handling emergencies such as when medical services are needed or even when evacuation by helicopter becomes necessary – something which can be expensive when the latter is not available.

This is most important for families since, at times, there arise things which need to be addressed urgently and so, as long as you are covered, you can go on with your trek knowing everything is ok.

For your information, offers of insurance do not fall under the services offered out by Blue Lake Travels & Tours. You may, however, buy a package of travel protection from MetLife, Shikhar Insurance, Prabhu Insurance, and other companies offering similar services for the Family Trek to Everest Base Camp.

It is advisable to obtain travel insurance in advance before your Everest Base Camp trek for the purpose of your safety during the trip.
