The Helambu trek is a perfect short trek nearby Kathmandu Valley. Despite being so close to Kathmandu, the Helambu region remains relatively un- spoilt. Besides the hyolmo culture of high mountain people, the company of green rhododendron and bamboo forests, majestic waterfalls, and snow-capped Himalayas make the trek one of most diverse treks near Kathmandu. The great Himalayan scenery at the border with Tibet and monasteries make a trek to the region an enthralling experience. The people living the highlands of the Langtang region are certainly the Nepalis, being the descendant of the Tibetan origin, they still look like Tibetans.
The Helambu Trek begins from Sundarijal, an hour's drive from Kathmandu. After about an hour's walk, we enter Shivapuri National Park. Continuing along the Chisopani, Kutumsang, Thadepati and Sermathang, the trek ends at the Melamchi Pul Bazar in the Helambu region. The trek passes through thick mountain forests with great Himalayan views and toward the end of the trip, you will also trek through some beautiful rice terraces and a number of splendid Buddhist monasteries.
The Helambu trek is the totally peaceful and calm area for trekking and the trails are blissfully quite than popular Annapurna and Everest areas.. With diverse range of brilliant green valleys misty rhododendron forests and distant horizons of snowy peaks. Helambu is the ideal short trek there are simple teahouses along this route. Yet the area remains relatively unspoilt by tourism. You will experience the yolmo culture of high mountains villages, marvel at vistas of lonely high mountains and watch enthralled as the farmers toil in the fields using hand made tools and teams of water buffalo. Helambu lies to the north of Kathmandu and offers the nearest experience of Sherpa culture without having to go to Everest region. The Sherpa village of Tarke Ghyang that forms the focus of Helambu is a charming enclave of farmers and yak herders. The trip starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal. Helambu provides an instant Himalayan trek for those with limited time.
This trek is an easy and enjoyable trip conducted at the average altitude of 3500m. The trek takes you through Thadepati to Tarke Gyang, where a choice of trails opens up. However we go along the south ridge through Sermathang, down to the river at Melamchi, the site of a mega project to bring drinking water to Kathmandu via a series of tunnels, finally the trek concludes with a drive down to Kathmandu via Melamchi Bazaar through Panchkhal.
Day 01: Meet at Kathmandu Airport
We will meet you at the Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer you to your hotel. When you have had time to settle in and freshen up after your long flight, you will be invited to visit our office for a briefing about your program.During this visit we will help you check your equipment and facilitate the processing of other necessary items such as National Park Permits etc.
Day 02: A full days sightseeing tour of Kathmandu valley.
After you have had your breakfast we will take you on a sightseeing tour around the Kathmandu valley. You will visit the Hindu temple complex at Pashupatinath (a UNESCO World Heritage site) & the biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath. You will also visit Swyambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, a 2000 year old temple, A visit to Patan City will enchant you with it’s famous fine arts and historical architecture. On return to your hotel you will have time to explore the local area, have dinner and perhaps take a leisurely stroll through the famous Durbar Square.
Day 03: Kathmandu Drive to Sundarijal (1350m) trekking to Chisopani (2140m).
Drive about 1 hour from Kathmandu takes you to trek start point Sundarijal. From Sundarijal the trail climb up besides the water pipes which supplies Kathmandu drinking water, the trail will enter through the Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve. The trail continues up hill through the forest to meet the Mulkharka Villages with the inhabitants of Tamanag people.
The trail continues with climbing on the forest of rhododendron and oaks after pass the Borlang Bhanjyang trail goes downhill to Chisopani (2140m), The mountain views are excellent from here can see the the views of Annapurna to Everest, overnight at lodge
Day 04: Chisopani trekking to Gul Bhanjyang (2140 m)
The trails runs out of the villages and continues level among pine plantation before arrive Pati Bhanjyang a lovely small village. From here the trail goes through small chortens,fields and forest mostly up and down hill before arriving Gul Bhanjyang ( 2140m), overnight in lodge.
Day 05: Gulbhanjyang trekking to Tharepati (3597m)
Today to trail steady climb through prickly leaved oak forest with excellent views of the mountains and the Helambu valley, Following a ridge line, the trail continues via lightly populated forest to Magen Goth from where the view of Langtang and Gosaikund peak is stunning, Above Magin Goth the trails climbs steeply through dense pine forest passing severeal chortens and ruined huts. when we arrived at Tharepati Rise early for excellent close up views of Gosainkunda and surrounding high mountains. Overnight at lodge.
Day 06: Tharepati trekking to Melamchi Gaon (2640m)
A short, steep descent through mixed fir and rhododendron forest rich with bird life. Crashing waterfalls sound from the rocky gullies below as you approach Melamchi Gaon. Overnight in lodge
Day 07: Melamchi gaon trekking to Tarkeghyang (2560m)
The trail descends steeply to the valley floor, where you can have a well earned dip in the crystal- clear river before completing the short and mild ascent up the other side of the valley. Tarkeghyang boasts an 18th century Gompa with huge brass prayer wheel. Overnight in lodge
Day 08: Tarkegyang trekking to Sermathang (2621m)
A flat pleasant walk through the beautiful forest takes you to Shermathang This is a an entering Sherpa village and they will be happy to introduce themselves that they are different from the Sherpa of Khumbu(Everest region) In the clear day the villages provide good views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gosainkunda and Rolwaling even Everest too in a distance. Overnight at lodge
Day 09: Shermathang Trekking to Melamchi Bazaar (828m) and drive to Kathmandu
Today The trail gradually descends all the way to Melamchi Pul Bazaar through meadows and cultivated fields. On the way, you come across several old villages. With the spectacular Mountain View, you will get to interact with local and friendly people. Drive back to Kathmandu by bus or private vehicle, join Nepali cultural dinner in the evening overnight in Kathmandu hotel.
Day 10: Final Departure
We will take you to the Kathmandu Airport to catch your flight home.
